Al-Basrah was placed under a state of emergency last month by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, but violence between gangs and feuding Shi'ite factions persists.

In Baghdad, a bomb explosion in a market killed two people and wounded at least 16, and two police officers were reported killed in separate attacks in the capital.
