Kyrgyz Police Suspect Muslim Clerics of Terrorism

Weapons and leaflets allegedly belonging to Hizb ut-Tahrir were among the haul in this police raid, in March (RFE/RL) July 20, 2006 – A senior Kyrgyz official today said that some Islamic clerics are "secret agents of terrorist organizations."

Osmonaly Guronov of the Interior Ministry said several clerics had been arrested in recent months for possessing explosives and firearms


The statement comes a day after the country's interior minister, Murat Sutalinov, said police would get additional defense technology and weapons to fight the banned Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
