Romania's Top Prosecutor Loses Job Over Iraqi Kidnapping

A scene from a rally in Romania in spring 2005 in support of the abducted journalists (epa) July 21, 2006 -- Romania's top prosecutor, Ilie Botos, resigned today after criticism of his handling of a case that ended with the flight of a Syrian-Romanian businessman accused of masterminding the abduction of three journalists in Iraq.

The heads of Romania's main secret services and a top civil servant resigned on July 20 after a meeting with President Traian Basescu about the disappearance of Omar Hayssam shortly before he was to be returned to jail.
