September 26, 2006 -- The United States is prepared to enter direct bilateral talks with North Korea, provided it agrees to return to international talks regarding its nuclear program.
The announcement was made today by U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Alexander Vershbow.
But Vershbow warned Pyongyang against "provocative and destabilizing" actions. Six-party nuclear disarmament talks have been stalled for one year, with Pyongyang demanding the lifting of U.S. financial sanctions.
