Iraq Lifts Curfews Following Hussein Verdict

Shi'ite Iraqis celebrating the Hussein verdict in Baghdad on November 5 (AFP) November 6, 2006 -- Iraq today began to lift a curfew in Baghdad and two majority-Sunni governorates (Diyala and Salah Al-Din), one day after former President Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.

The last ban, on vehicle movement, is to be lifted early on the morning of November 7.

World leaders, including U.S. President George W. Bush, welcomed the guilty verdict.

However, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi expressed his government's opposition to executing Hussein. British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain was against the death penalty in general. The Finnish EU presidency issued a statement against executing the former Iraqi leader.
