Japan Floats Compromise On Kurile Dispute With Russia

(RFE/RL) December 14, 2006 -- Japan's foreign minister has proposed a solution to a dispute with Russia over a string of islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Taro Aso said the two countries could split the four main islands called the Southern Kuriles by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan.

Aso made the proposal on December 13 before a parliamentary foreign affairs committee. The islands were seized by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II.
