Police said a Serbian criminal gang wanted to kill Dodik on behalf of Montenegrin individuals and officials trying to protect their illegal interests.

Members of the gang are also wanted for the murder in 2003 of the reformist Serbian prime minister Zoran Djindjic.

Dodik declined to comment, but said he doubted Montenegrin officials were involved.
