Ukrainian Premier Seeks Foreign Minister's Ouster

Borys Tarasyuk (file photo) (Ukrinform) January 16, 2007 -- Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has asked Ukrainian prosecutors to take measures against Borys Tarasyuk, who was sacked by parliament as foreign minister but was reappointed by the president.

Parliament dismissed Tarasyuk on December 1, 2006, but President Viktor Yushchenko reappointed him shortly thereafter.

Yanukovych said prosecutors should stop Tarasyuk's activitie, which he said harmed Ukraine's image.

On January 15, Tarasyuk began a two-day visit to Prague, which Yanukovych said he had not authorized.

Yanukovych and Yushchenko, who constitutionally appoints the foreign and defense ministers, are involved in a power struggle.
