March 12, 2007 -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has warned that a proposed U.S. missile-defense system risks splitting the alliance.
De Hoop Scheffer, in an interview published in today's "Financial Times," says the shield would only cover part of Europe's NATO members, leaving out southern countries such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
The NATO chief said all members should have equal security and a plan should be devised to provide it.
