Protests To Mark First Anniversary Of Belarus Election

Police and demonstrators clash in Minsk on March 25, 2006 (RFE/RL) March 19, 2007 -- Protests are expected in Belarus today to mark the first anniversary of the disputed reelection of Belarus President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

Lukashenka was able to seek reelection for an unprecedented third term thanks to a controversial referendum in 2004 that abolished the constitution's two-term presidential limit.

Last year's election touched off mass protests broken up by police only after four days, with more than 600 arrests.
