Kyrgyz Lawmakers Vote To Decriminalize Libel, Slander

March 26, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's parliament today approved a proposal in the first reading to remove two articles on libel and slander from the Criminal Code.

A second reading is scheduled within the next two weeks.


Articles 127 and 128 has been used by Kyrgyz officials and politicians to fine and jail independent journalists and close down media outlets in the past years.
