Russia Test-Fires New Ballistic Missile

(RFE/RL) May 29, 2007 -- Russia has test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile designed to avoid missile-defense systems.

The test took place today at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk Oblast, some 800 kilometers north of Moscow.

Russian news reports say the RS-24 missile can be armed with up to 10 different warheads.

Russia has said U.S. plans to deploy parts of a missile-defense shield in Central Europe are a threat to Russia.
