Washington, 22 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The White House is turning to a popular American comic book hero for help in teaching the children of Bosnia how to protect themselves against landmines.

U.S. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife of President Bill Clinton, announced the start of a project today that will employ the talents of the fictional hero "Superman" to instruct children about the dangers of mines.

The United Nations estimates that about three million unexploded land mines from the civil war are still buried in Bosnian soil.

Mrs. Clinton said the United States, the U.N. and the Time-Warner Company, which publishes the "Superman" comics, will jointly publish and distribute a comic book titled: "Superman: Deadly Legacy," which will provide children with information about what they should do to protect themselves. The books will be printed in the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets and will be distributed in Sarajevo.
