Armenia: Prosecutor Responds To Letter From Opposition Leader

Prague, 6 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Armenia's prosecutor general, Aztavazd Gevoekian, today responded to a letter written by former presidential candidate Vazgen Manukyan, which claimed responsibility for an attack on the parliament building last year.

RFE/RL's correspondent in Yerevan reports the prosecutor general said Manukyan has already been invited to testify on several occasions, but did not appear in court. The prosecutor general said Manukyan should present himself to the authorities and plead guilty.

Manukyan said in yesterday's letter that it would be "logical" to conduct criminal proceedings against him, but not against the rank-and-file opposition activists who went on trial last month on charges of inciting mass disorder.

The attack on the parliament building followed reports of widespread election-rigging in favor of incumbent President Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
