Armenia/Azerbaijan: Iran Denies Being Conduit For Arms

Yerevan, 6 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - A spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in Yerevan, Majid Razavi, today categorically denied Azerbaijani accusations regarding arms transfers to Armenia through Iran. Razavi referred the accusation as "propaganda," and said regional problems should be resolved by the regional powers.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have recently traded charges and counter-charges over security issues. One charge made by Baku was that Russian arms were being sent to Iran, and then being secretly transferred to Armenia.

Razavi also said, regarding the upcoming visit of Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati to Armenia, that besides the Iran-Armenia-Turkmenistan tri-partite cooperation, his country aims to create another axis of Iran-Armenia-Greece, and possibly involving Georgia.
