Brussels, 9 June 2000 (RFE/RL) - Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev is expected today to provide more details of Russia's proposal for a joint anti-missile defense system for Russia, Europe and NATO. Sergeyev will meet with NATO defense ministers on the final day of a NATO meeting in Brussels. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the idea earlier this week and U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen said then he was anxious to get more details.
Russia remains opposed to U.S. plans to build an anti-missile defense system to defend itself from potential attacks from so-called "rogue states."
Yesterday, NATO Secretary-General George Robertson told the European allies at the meeting that they are not contributing enough to Europe's defense. The defense ministers also issued a statement condemning ongoing violence against Serbs and other minorities in Kosovo.
