MINSK -- A court in Belarus has sentenced U.S. lawyer Emanuel Zeltser to three years in jail on charges of industrial espionage and carrying forged documents, his lawyer said.
The sentence was likely to plunge relations between Washington and the ex-Soviet state deeper into crisis.
Zeltser, a specialist in Russian law and organized crime, was arrested in March at the height of a diplomatic row between the two countries.
The U.S. State Department has expressed concern over Zeltser's arrest and the state of his health.
