Belarusian Opposition Activist's Appeal Rejected

MINSK -- A Belarusian opposition activist jailed for seven years for financial mismanagement has had his appeal rejected by a Minsk court, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Businessman Andrey Bandarenka was taken into custody almost one year ago and found guilty earlier this year.

In addition to being given a seven-year jail sentence, all of his property was confiscated.

Bandarenka, who ran as a candidate in the 2008 parliamentary elections, has said the case against him is politically motivated.

He was not present in the courtroom today when his case was reviewed.
