TSKHINVALI -- Dozens of construction workers have gone on strike in Tskhinvali because of unpaid wages, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.
Several workers told RFE/RL on April 9 that they have stopped working on several reconstruction projects in Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia, because they have not received their salaries in four months.
Eduard Kokoity, the de facto president of South Ossetia, personally met with the workers to listen to their complaints and advised them to write an official letter against the management of the company.
The heads of the South Ossetia Reconstruction Committee have been criticized recently by the local government for their inability to control the quality of work or to manage their budgets.
Kokoity has publicly expressed dissatisfaction about the renovation of a theater that was built 10 years ago. The theater was the site of Kokoity's inauguration ceremonies as leader of South Ossetia. He said the theater currently looks "hideous due to the poorly planned restoration work."
Citizens of Tskhinvali have also voiced their unhappiness with the pace of construction of new apartment buildings that were damaged during the brief war between Russia and Georgia in South Ossetia in August 2008.
Many people in South Ossetia still live in temporary shelters awaiting the reconstruction of the apartments.
