DUSHANBE (Reuters) -- Suspected drug dealers threw a grenade at antidrug police in Tajikistan, badly wounding two of them, officials in the Central Asian state have said.
Tajikistan lies on the main drug-trafficking route to Western Europe from Afghanistan, the world's top opium producer.
Fakhriddin Jonmakhmadov, a spokesman for Tajikistan's Drugs Control Agency, said its officers were trying to detain a group of drug dealers late on March 10 in a suburb of Dushanbe.
"The suspected drug dealers put up heavy and unexpected resistance and threw a hand grenade, which badly injured two officers with shrapnel," he said, adding that the suspects had then fled.
Last month, Tajik border guards killed six drug smugglers armed with assault rifles near the border with Afghanistan.
Afghanistan produced more than 90 percent of the world's supply of opium in 2008.
