Gay Activists Arrested, Fined In Belarus

MINSK -- A Minsk court today found seven gay activists guilty of participating in an unsanctioned mass gathering and fined them about $6 each, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The activists were detained on May 15 while trying to hold a gay-pride parade that was not sanctioned by Minsk authorities. Two of the detained activists are Russian citizens from St. Petersburg.

About 30 people took part in the disrupted march, including an Australian citizen.

The activists planned to gather near the Belarusian State Philharmonic and march along Independence Avenue to the National Academy of Sciences.

But police dispersed the gathering and arrested several of the activists before they could get started.
