Pakistani Taliban Claims Deadly Attack On NATO Fuel Tankers

Passengers sat on the roof of a bus near burning oil tankers that were attacked by militants on October 1 near Shikarpur, Pakistan.

Police in Pakistan say suspected militants have again attacked trucks carrying supplies for NATO troops in Afghanistan -- this time shooting at and setting fire to as many as 20 tankers near the capital, Islamabad.

Police are quoted as saying at least three people were killed in the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility.

"Around eight or nine people came here and attacked the area where the tankers were parked." the acting superintendent of police, Mirwaiz Niaz, told Reuters near the scene. "Some people were injured, according to our initial information."

The October 4 incident represents at least the second attack in Pakistan targeting trucks bringing supplies for foreign forces in Afghanistan in recent days.

More than 20 trucks were reported destroyed in an attack on October 1.

The attacks have occurred following the closure by Pakistani authorities of a key border crossing with Afghanistan, through which many supply trucks pass, following a NATO helicopter attack last week that killed three Pakistani troops in the border region.

Pakistani authorities have said the crossing could reopen after security improves.

NATO supply vehicles have meanwhile continued to move into Afghanistan through a second crossing in Pakistan that remains open.
