Islamabad says UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon plans to arrive in Pakistan on August 14 for a visit focusing on that country's worst floods in history.

Pakistani foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit says Ban will discuss relief efforts with government leaders on August 15.

The same day, he plans to visit flood-devastated areas.

Basit also confirmed that Ban's visit is taking place two days ahead of a visit scheduled by U.S. Senator John Kerry (Democrat, Massachusetts) -- who will meet with Pakistani officials to discuss aid work and disbursements on August 17.

Pakistan now says up to 20 million people face direct or indirect harm as a result of flooding.

The UN says it thinks about 1,600 people have died from the floods.

Islamabad has confirmed 1,343 deaths so far.
