Blast Kills Seven People, Including Six Children, In Eastern Afghanistan, Officials Say

The deadly blast occurred in the Lalpur district of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar Province

At least seven people, including six children, have been killed in an explosion in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, local officials said.

The incident occurred on January 10 in the Bijalan area of the Lalopar district in the eastern Nangarhar Province in mid-morning, the local department of information said in a statement.

The Taliban-appointed governor’s office said the blast took place when a cart selling food items struck an unexploded mortar shell outside an elementary school.

No other details were immediately available.

The extremist Islamic State (IS) group, a rival of the Taliban, has a presence in the province. IS has staged several attacks targeting the Taliban since it took over the country in mid-August.

Afghanistan has a huge number of unexploded land mines and other ordnance from the country's decades of war and conflict.
