Afghan officials say at least six people have been killed and several injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowd of sports fans in northern Afghanistan.

Amanuddin Quriashi, a senior official in the Imam Sahib district of Konduz Province, said the district police chief was among those wounded in the bombing on March 13.

Konduz Province police chief General Mohammad Khalil Andarabi said the father of the speaker of the Afghan parliament was among those killed in the attack.

The identities of all those killed in the attack have yet to be determined.

The crowd was watching a game of buzkashi, a more aggressive version of equestrian polo played with the carcass of a dead goat rather than a ball.
