Officials Say Female Lawmaker Abducted In South

KABUL -- Local authorities say a female member of the Afghan parliament has been abducted by suspected insurgents in Afghanistan's southern province of Ghazni.

A senior local official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed over the phone to RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that Friba Ahmadi Kakar was abducted late on August 10 along with her two children in Ghazni Province while traveling from the southern city of Kandahar to Kabul.

She was the representative of Kandahar in the lower house of parliament.

Officials in Kandahar also confirmed the abduction.

There has been no claim of responsibility.
