Explosion Kills One In Kandahar

Afghan security forces inspect the site of a blast at a police arms depot in Kandahar on April 21.

At least one person has been killed and 15 injured in an explosion near a police station in Kandahar, the capital of the southern Afghan province of the same name.

"Police were defusing the explosives seized from the Taliban today in Kandahar city that suddenly exploded," provincial spokesman Samim Khpalwak said on April 21.

He said one civilian passerby was killed, while five civilians and five police officers were injured.

Officials had said earlier that the blast was a bomb attack.

Kandahar is the heartland of the Taliban insurgency and the city was the capital of the extremists' 1996-2001 regime.

Attacks on Afghan soldiers and police have intensified in recent weeks as the insurgents mount their annual warm-weather offensive.
