Afghan, Pakistani Troops Exchange Fire, One Killed

Pakistani soldiers patrol near the Afghan border.

Officials say one Pakistani soldier was killed when Afghan and Pakistani troops exchanged fire across the border today.

In Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar, a senior military official said Afghan forces fired on Pakistani military checkpoints, killing one Pakistani soldier and injuring three.

A border police commander in Afghanistan's eastern province of Khost confirmed the exchange of fire and accused Pakistan of starting the battle.

It was the most serious cross-border clash between Afghan and Pakistani troops since May 2007, when three civilians and a policeman were killed.
