The governor of Albania's central bank has been arrested in the capital, Tirana.
The Prosecutor General's office said Ardian Fullani was charged with abuse of office and the theft of 713 million lek ($6.63 million).
The bank's inspector general, Elivar Golemi, was also arrested late on September 5 and faces the same charges.
The two could face up to seven years in jail if convicted.
Their detentions come five weeks after a worker at the central bank, Ardian Bitraj, admitted stealing money over the course of four years.
Bitraj said he would take new bank notes printed in Switzerland when they arrived at his workplace and replace them with old books.
