Azerbaijani Independent Newspaper Suspends Publication

The independent Azerbaijani newspaper "Azadliq" has been forced to suspend publishing due to financial problems.

The newspaper's editor-in-chief Rahim Haciev said that without an immediate payment of some $25,000 to the newspaper's printer, the latest issue of "Azadliq" could not be printed.

"Azadliq" has faced financial problems before. Some believe the problems were caused by the newspaper's reporting on government corruption and cronyism.

"Azadliaq's" announcement of a suspension of publication came as two prominent human rights defenders -- Leyla and Arif Yunus -- were charged with high treason and financial crimes.
