Hundreds of people in Sarajevo paid tribute to the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide as a truck transporting 30 coffins passed on its journey to the city for burial. The remains were recovered this year in several mass graves apparently dug by Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-95 Bosnian War. Srebrenica fell to Bosnian Serb forces on July 11, 1995, leading its Muslim population to flee to a UN compound seeking protection. When Bosnian Serb forces arrived at the compound, Dutch peacekeepers handed over the base. Bosnian Serb forces then separated out the men and boys for execution. More than 8,000 were killed.
