Casualties Reported In Clashes Between Militant Groups

ISLAMABAD -- Casualties were reported as fighting between Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) and Ansar-ul-Islam militant groups entered its fourth day in Pakistan's Khyber tribal district near the Afghan border.

Pakistani media says at least six insurgents were killed on January 28 in the latest clashes between the two banned Islamic militant groups.

It remains unclear how many casualties each group has suffered.

RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal correspondent in the area says more than 80 militants in total have been killed since the clashes started in Khyber's Tirah Maidan area on January 25.

Local residents and intelligence sources say clashes have since spread to the neighboring Tirah Kookikhel area.

The TTP, known also as the Pakistani Taliban and Ansar-ul-Islam have been active in the region for years.
