Chess Legend Kasparov Concludes A Week Of Comeback Games

Former world champion chess player Garry Kasparov plays fellow grandmaster Levon Aronian at the Grand Chess Tour at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center in St. Louis on August 15.

Former world chess champion and Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov concluded his comeback on August 18, after a week of games. He came in eighth out of 10 players.

Kasparov took on a much younger generation of masters at the Rapid and Blitz tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.

The former 15-time world champion Kasparov played inconsistently in the format featuring faster-paced chess. He won just a few games against the other nine players, who included four of the world’s top 10.

The winner of the tournament was Levon Aronian from Armenia.

Kasparov, 54, was born in Baku when it was part of the Soviet Union. He retired from chess in 2005 to start a political movement called The Other Russia in opposition to President Vladimir Putin.

Kasparov eventually left Russia, saying in 2013 he would never return to the country, and he received Croatian citizenship in 2014. He spends much of his time in New York.
