Polish President Andrzej Duda promised he would veto controversial judiciary reform legislation that has sparked large protests across Poland and drew warnings from the European Union. The legislation enables current Supreme Court judges to be fired, except those approved by the justice minister, effectively putting Poland's judicial system under the ruling party’s political control. In a statement broadcast on national television on July 24, Duda said he felt the law would not "strengthen a sense of justice." (Reuters)
