TBILISI -- The Tbilisi city court has sent detained former Deputy Prosecutor-General Davit Chkhatarshvili to pretrial detention.

Judge Zviad Esebua also ruled on December 8 that the preliminary hearing of the case against Chkhatarshvili will be held on January 27.

Chkhatarshvili was detained on December 7 and charged with abuse of power, organizing inhuman treatment of inmates, fabricating evidence, and provoking criminal activities.

Chkhatarshvili served as Georgia's deputy prosecutor-general in 2010-2012.

His arrest is related to a prison-abuse scandal that broke out in September 2012 ahead of the parliamentary elections, when television stations aired graphic video footage of inmates being abused.
