Georgian Criticizes Russia's 'Aggression' At Rights Forum

Georgia's foreign minister has urged Russia to "stop its aggressive policies against sovereign states," saying that Moscow’s "aggression" against Ukraine is not an isolated case.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 2, Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili said that "Russia's aggression against Ukraine, annexation of Crimea and further destabilization of its eastern regions should be duly responded to by the international community."

"We call upon the Russia Federation to stop its aggressive policies against sovereign states and reaffirm our strong support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine," Beruchashvili said.

Beruchashvili said that "Ukraine is not an isolated case," adding that recent treaties between Moscow and Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions "are the continuation of Russia’s creeping annexation policy."

Russia recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent nations after a five-day war with Georgia in 2008 and has thousands of troops in the breakaway provinces.
