Hungarian philosopher Gaspar Miklos Tamas, a prominent thinker and opposition figure, died on January 15 at the age on 74 after a long illness, RFE/RL has learned. Born in Cluj, Romania, Tamas, often referred to as TGM, emigrated to Hungary in 1978, where he became one of the best-known members of the anti-communist opposition. In later years, Tamas became a harsh critic of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's far-right nationalist government. He did a stint as a visiting professor at Yale University in the United States and also taught at British and French universities.
