38 Inmates To Leave Georgian Jails

Georgian Penitentiaries Minister Sozar Subari

TBILISI -- The Georgian Interior Ministry says 38 inmates are scheduled for release from penitentiaries on October 30.

Georgia's new Penitentiaries Minister Sozar Subari told journalists the previous day that more than 300 convicts who were sentenced for minor crimes and have served two-thirds of their prison terms will be freed.

On October 30, Subari added that a special commission will be working on ending suspended prison terms for some 4,000 individuals.

The move comes days after Georgia's new government officially started work.

The government is led by Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose Georgian Dream coalition won the country's parliamentary elections on October 1.
