Grammy Award winner Shervin Hajipour, who was facing a prison sentence for creating the viral song Baraye, said on September 23 that his case had been closed and he'd been granted amnesty. In a social media post announcing the news, Hajipour expressed hope that his generation would be able to "live the life it deserves." An Iranian court in March sentenced the 27-year-old to three years and eight months in prison for "inciting unrest against national security" and "spreading propaganda against the regime." He was also ordered to write a song about U.S. "atrocities." The song Baraye became the anthem of the "Women, Life, Freedom" protests in Iran that followed the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody for allegedly improperly wearing a head scarf.
