Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has stopped a “terrorist group” from infiltrating the country from the Turkish border, an IRGC commander said on July 21.
Alireza Madani, an IRGC commander in the city of Salmas, was quoted by state news agency IRNA as saying the incident occurred in a region 25 kilometers from the city of Salmas in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province.
Madani said, "Two of the terrorists managed to flee into Turkey. One of them was arrested and another one killed during the IRGC operation.”
He added that the four were “counterrevolutionary elements living in Turkey" who sought to "launch terrorist activities in Iran."
Several clashes have been reported in past weeks between Iranian forces and Kurdish militants.
Earlier this month, an Iranian lawmaker and a local official were wounded and their driver and a veterinarian traveling with them killed in an assassination attempt in the western Kermanshah Province.
