Iraqi Bomb Attacks Kill, Injure Dozens

Iraqi officials say a series of bombings around the country have killed nearly 40 people.

The officials said there were several explosions in Baghdad that killed at least 24 people. More than 70 reportedly were injured.

Earlier, a bombing in a village in northern Iraq killed at least 15 people and injured about 50.

Violence in Iraq has spiked this year, raising concern of a repeat of the sectarian bloodshed that killed tens of thousands of people in 2006 and 2007.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in violence, including sectarian attacks, since the beginning of this year.
