Kurdish Peshmerga Fighters Take Control of Kirkuk Province

Kurdish Peshmerga forces took up positions abandoned by Iraqi Army units around Kirkuk Province. Army bases had been looted after being abandoned. Kirkuk Governor Najmiddin Karim promised that the province's citizens will be protected against the advance of Sunni Islamist militants. (RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq)
