More than 500 oil workers in Kazakhstan’s western region of Manghystau are continuing a strike launched almost two weeks ago despite two of their colleagues falling ill on December 21 with blood pressure problems. A district prosecutor said earlier that a probe has been launched against the workers on a charge of holding an “illegal” strike. The workers of the West Oil Software company in the town of Zhetybai are demanding the integration of their salary payment system into that of the national KazMunaiGas energy corporation, which would ensure a pay rise, as well as the renewal of their technical equipment.
