BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz officials say opposition United Kyrgyzstan party leader Adakhan Madumarov will be interrogated in connection with the killing of the former head of the country's presidential office, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister Turganbaev told RFE/RL that Madumarov, who was Security Council secretary in 2009 when Medet Sadyrkulov was killed, would be summoned to police to answer questions regarding the case, as would former Prosecutor-General Elmurza Satybaldiev and ex-Interior Minister Moldomusa Kongantiev.
Madumarov has officially applied to the Central Election Commission to take part in the presidential election scheduled for October 30. He has passed the mandatory Kyrgyz-language test, paid the candidate fee, and provided the necessary documents proving that at least 30,000 voters support him.
Sadyrkulov, who served as head of ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiev's office, and two of his associates were found dead in a burned-out car in March 2009, shortly after he left Bakiev to join the opposition.
At the time, officials said the deaths were the result of a traffic accident. But Sadyrkulov's relatives challenged that finding, saying the bodies were in positions indicating that the victims were already dead when the car caught fire.
Omurbek Osmonov was tried and found guilty of the traffic accident that allegedly caused the fire. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail but found dead in April 2010 in a village near Bishkek.
The investigation into Sadyrkulov's death was resumed that same month, after Bakiev fled the country after antigovernment demonstrations.
On September 14, Interior Minister Zarylbek Rysaliev told journalists that 17 suspects had been detained in connection with Sadyrkulov's killing.
