Kyrgyz Mufti Sues Former Deputy For Alleged Hajj Corruption

Mufti Chubak-Hajji Jalilov

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz Muslim leader Mufti Chubak-Hajji Jalilov has filed a lawsuit against his former deputy for alleged corruption in organizing the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Jalilov's press service told journalists today that the lawsuit against Ubaidilla Sarybaev was filed to seek "Sarybaev's punishment for corruption when dealing with the organization of the hajj...last year."

Sarybaev used to head the Kyrgyz Islamic directorate's branch in the southern province of Osh until Jalilov sacked him on December 5. The next day Jalilov announced the closure of the Islamic directorate's branch in Osh.

Sarybaev told RFE/RL that the corruption accusations against him are baseless.
