Smirnov Confident Of Reelection In Transdniester Vote

Igor Smirnov

Voters in the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniester are going to the polls today to vote in the region's presidential election.

Incumbent Igor Smirnov, who has led Moldova's de facto independent region since 1990, has expressed confidence he will be reelected for a fifth straight term.

Casting his ballot, the 70-year-old Smirnov said the election will bring Transdniester a stronger state and the fulfillment of a 2006 referendum on independence and closer ties with Russia.

Transdniester proclaimed its independence from Moldova after a short war in the early 1990s, but it is not recognized by Russia or any other country.
