Pakistani Lawmaker Shot Dead In Northwest

Unidentified gunmen have killed a newly elected lawmaker in northwestern Pakistan.

Police on June 3 said provincial lawmaker Farid Khan was killed in Hangu, a district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the killing and called on authorities to bring the assailants to justice.

Khan was elected as an independent candidate but joined the Pakistan Movement for Justice party (Pakistan-e Insaf, or PTI) of retired cricket star Imran Khan.

That party is currently heading a coalition government in the province.

It campaigned for negotiations with the Taliban and had vowed to end U.S. drone strikes if voted into power.
