Three police officers have been killed and two passersby were injured during a shoot-out in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.
Daghestan's Interior Ministry said on June 11 that six police officers came under attack in the Novolak district, which borders Chechnya.
Two people the ministry called "militants" were also killed in the shoot-out.
The motive for the alleged attack is not clear.
Daghestan, along with Russia's other volatile North Caucasus republics such as Ingushetia, Chechnya and Kabardino-Balkaria, continue to experience violence linked to Islamic extremists and organized criminal groups.
Islamic insurgents in the region, who profess extreme forms of Islam, regularly attack moderate Muslims, police, and government officials.
