Pope Francis arrived in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, on June 24 at the start of a three-day visit. He was greeted at the airport by President Serzh Sarkisian and Catholicos Garegin II, the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, along with other government officials and church leaders. During his visit, Francis is expected to highlight the Church's concern with the plight of Christians in the Middle East, and to further strengthen ties between the Vatican and the state-backed Armenian Apostolic Church.
