Russia's Rosatom Starts Work On Fourth Reactor At China Nuclear Plant

The fourth unit of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is seen under construction after its groundbreaking ceremony in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, on September 27.

The Russian state nuclear company Rosatom has started work on the fourth unit at China's Tianwan nuclear power plant.

Russian news agencies reported on September 27 that the first concrete was poured at the site in preparation for the installation of a VVER-1000 reactor with a capacity of some 1060 megawatts.

Rosatom built the two operating units at the Tianwan plant and work on the third unit started at the end of 2012.

The fourth reactor at Tianwan should be launched at the end of 2017. The Tianwan plant is capable of housing eight units.

Rosatom is already in talks with China to build four more reactors for the plant.

There are currently 29 nuclear power plants under construction in China and the country has plans to build 200 more.
